Put Yourself on the Calendar
The first time I had a chance to actually experience being coached by a Certified Health Coach, was about 1 year ago. I have had many coaches throughout my life of organized and collegiate sports, but I had never, surprisingly, had a health coach. That may be because it only became board certifiable in 2017 and is still new.
This experience, was one I had never had before, and it felt really good. Usually, when I have sought help of one kind or another, I have been told what to do and given protocols to meet. This was different, the coach listened to me, actually listened to what I was saying and struggling with. They got me thinking about things differently, and really dove into what I had envisioned and wanted for myself. There is quite more to the story, but to save your boredom, I began experimenting with small changes that fit my time and lifestyle but also had great impact. We discussed barriers and my readiness to actually make the small changes I wanted to. Surprisingly, the single most important thing I began doing, that I had never done before, was actually scheduling time in the day for myself. Sounds so easy and simple. To me, it wasn’t. I knew I wanted to exercise, get out for a walk, join a class and make home cooked meals more often. However, as a busy mom of three, community volunteer, and someone who maybe didn’t say “no” often enough, and was ready to help anyone with anything at a moment’s notice, this was life changing. I mean, yeah, I’d get a workout in here and there if it worked out, like if somebody didn’t need something and I hadn’t over scheduled myself that day. Otherwise, it didn’t happen.
That health coach brought out in me a simple, but life changing adjustment that didn’t occur to me before. Put yourself on the calendar, put the workout on the calendar, put the journaling time on the calendar, you need 15 minutes to go outside and take a deep breath during the day, put it on the calendar. You want uninterrupted time for coffee with yourself in the morning, put it on the calendar. Wow, what a concept!
